At Indi-ED we have many budding artists but they are also mathematicians! Have you ever wondered how math and art are connected? Because creativity is one of our value themes this year, we’ve made intentional efforts to integrate it throughout our content, but it’s comes pretty naturally with math.
Many artists use shapes and geometry to create their masterpieces. For instance, think about how many circles you can spot in Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting, “Starry Night.” Artists use these shapes to create balance, symmetry, and a sense of harmony in their artwork.
In my cohort we used circles to model different place values. This was inspired by Kandinsky’s “Several Circles”. And we learned about fractions by creating Mondrian art.
Patterns are another way math and art come together. Artists often use repeating patterns to add interest and texture to their artwork. This symmetry, which you can find in nature, is also used by artists to make their creations visually appealing.
Math helps artists ensure that their creations are the right size and in proportion by measuring and comparing different parts of their subjects to make sure they look just right.
Math and art are not so different after all. So we will keep exploring, keep creating, and keep having fun with math and art – the magical duo of creativity and logic!
